In a revealing interview with fellow actor Emmanuel Ehumadu, known as Labiata, Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola shared her poignant journey of love and loss, shedding light on her single status at 54.
The veteran star, who has captivated audiences since her debut in the 1995 film Owo Blow, disclosed that her soulmate’s untimely death has deeply impacted her view on marriage. “He died; I don’t talk about it, but he died. Do you know how long it took me to find him? A very long time, but he is gone,” she lamented, her voice heavy with emotion.
Akintola firmly believes that marriage should not be entered into lightly or merely for the sake of tradition. “I don’t believe that you get married for marriage’s sake. If you’re not going to be truthful to your vows, then why do it? The person I could commit to forever is gone,” she stated, emphasizing her reluctance to consider a new relationship without genuine connection.
Despite the heartbreak, she remains open to love. “If I ever see someone and I envision forever with that person, I would marry them—even if I’m 82. But I won’t do it if I don’t see that potential,” she affirmed. This hopeful outlook highlights Akintola’s belief in the transformative power of true love, regardless of age.
The actress expressed disappointment with the state of modern marriages, suggesting that many enter unions without understanding the depth of commitment involved. “Marriage is very difficult, and it’s not wise to go into it with someone you know you can’t be with forever. I refuse to stress myself over something that lacks sincerity,” she stressed, candidly discussing the emotional toll of failed relationships.
With over two decades in the industry and a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2013 Nollywood Movies Awards, Akintola’s journey is a testament to her resilience and passion for her craft. From starring alongside industry greats like Richard Mofe Damijo in Out of Bounds to becoming a household name, her story resonates with many.
